Frio River
Since we eat, sleep, talk, write, & live The Frio River all day while it being one of the primary reasons for funrivers.com, we might as well do a little Wiki about it. Besides the obvious beauty of the see-through waters, millions of white rocks, lines of cypress trees, and hills surrounding the area- The Frio River does have a story behind it.
Many know and call it The Frio or Frio River, however the real name is “Rio Frio”- Spanish for “Cold River.” Anybody that has dipped their feet or whole body in The Frio Waters can attest to the literal translation.
The West Frio is fed by springs beginning in the NorthEast Tip of Real County North of Leakey, Texas- where the H.E.B. Camp resides. Yes.. the same H.E.B. you can get groceries- but there’s no store here. In Leakey, it joins forces with the East Frio and continues the rest of it’s 200 mile southeast voyage ending in the Nueces River mouth south of Three Rivers, Texas. During the Frio’s trip, it also ventures through our domain of Rio Frio and Concan; and does some releasing into Choke Canyon while passing through McMullen & Live Oak Counties before reaching it final destination.
The above/right map (From Wikipedia.com) is a good representation of the The Frio River’s full path.
Many know the Frio River because it runs through “Garner State Park” where many thousands camp, swim, kayak, and paddleboat every year. Actually, just today I was reading in the August 2008 Edition of Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine about the Top Ten State Park Swimming Holes, and Garner State Park was #2! Of course we think it should be in the top position but we’ll take it!
Even famous Country Music Stars sing about The Frio.. Country fan or not.. there’s a good chance you’ve heard or heard of the song “All My Ex’s Live In Texas” by George Strait. Strait sings… “I remember that old frio river where I learned to swim…….” Our bet is many folks learned to swim, tube and fish on the Frio..- Tubing & Fishing for Me!
Of course and as mentioned in other posts.. many Cabins, Cottages, Bunkhouses, Lodges, RV Sites, Tent Camping, and other accommodations sit on or near The Frio River and as always can be found HERE…..
We know there are other tidbits of Frio River information, but we have plenty of time to share wiki-like facts; plus we want to keep you coming back for more!
However, for more information on The Frio and a good resource where we got much of the above information; check out Frio River’s Official Wikipedia Page.

I have been enjoying the Frio River every year since I was 14. I am now 40 and have been including my son and his friends as well. We would rather spend a week on the Frio than go anywhere else. There is something for everyone. From babies to grandmas. We enjoy the dance at Garner State park and the swimming hole at Neals. We always come back full of stories and looking forward to our next trip. I recommend this to anyone wanting to have good clean fun.

I want to go there now. I really want to go there. Looks fantastic. Great Pictures featuring park. Maybe I can save up the money to get there and back. Know I wouldn’t want to leave though. Bossier City, LA.
